Roses
The rose is the flower of love and has inspired poets, musicians, and painters for centuries. My grandmother was an avid rose gardener and one of my fondest memories as a child growing up in North Carolina was helping her gather roses. She dried the petals and made deliciously fragrant potpourri and her home always smelled of roses. I love painting roses and each time I pick up my brush to paint one I am reminded that roses are a gift to the spirit.

Flower Markets
Flower markets make me smile and I cannot resist photographing and painting them. One of my favorite things to do early on Saturday mornings is to wander through rows of fresh picked flowers and produce at our local flower markets looking for the perfect painterly bouquet of flowers to take home to arrange. The sights and heady scent of the flowers in the morning sun inspire me to paint the charming market scenes in California, as well as in Paris and Provence.

Provence
The Southern region of France, known as Provence, is magical and one of my favorite places to visit to photograph and paint. The hillsides and fields are carpeted with the sweet scent of lavender and every morning of the week small farmers and gardeners travel to a different village for market day. Colorful tents and market umbrellas are draped with Provencal fabric in bright blues, reds, and golds, sheltering the fresh produce and flowers the farmers bring to market. Shoppers carry brightly colored hand woven baskets (no plastic bags here) to fill with the day’s bounty. Fields of sunflowers abound and the happy faces of sunflowers follow the sun as it travels through the blue sky during the day. |

Beach Cottage
My family spent summers at our grandparents’ beach cottage located at Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. The cottage was a big sprawling two-story home with wraparound porches and lots of nooks and crannies for us to explore. Geraniums and Blanket Flowers (Gaillardi) grew wild on the property and made perfect decorations for us to use on the elaborate sandcastles we built. I am now fortunate to live near the beach in California and my beach cottage paintings are reminiscent of those warm summer days in North Carolina.
